Spring Creek Deep Freeze

 

A Fly Fishing Team USA membership is required for this event. This event will award points for the 2025 North East regional cycle.

We anticipate a demand far greater than the 12 spots for this event however we will not expand greater than 12 anglers (6 beats). This will allow us to set the fairest beats possible for winter conditions.

State College, PA

Event format:
2, 1.5 hr competitor controlled sessions

Competition Sectors:
Sector 1: Spring creek

Fish:
Wild brown trout

Schedule:
8:00am-9:30am      Session 1
10:15am-11:45am  Session 2
1:00pm-2:30pm      Session 3
3:15-4:45pm            Session 4
 
Transportation:
Transportation must be provided by the anglers.
 
Awards:
Medals to top 3 individuals.

Angler limit:
This event will be limited to the first 12 anglers.

Registration fee:
$25 due at time of registration

No fish period:
A comp water no fish policy will be in effect starting Sunday January 14th at dark. 
No fish water starts at Benner Spring parking area (ie. Shiloh Road Bridge, directly below the Benner Spring State Fish Hatchery) and extends downstream to Fisherman's Paradise (ie. Bellefonte State Fish Hatchery). All other water will remain open.

With the temperatures forecasted so low on the 21st and water levels likely high, our tentative plan is to push the comp to our backup date, the 28th. We wanted to give everyone plenty of notice and keep you in the loop. We will continue to monitor and send an official update/decision by EOD this Sunday 1/14/24.

With an increase in temps forecasted, decrease in wind, and less rain last night than expected, we will move forward with the 21st date. As a reminder the comp water no fish policy starts tomorrow at dark.

Good Afternoon

As stated earlier this week, we are moving forward with the comp this Sunday January 21st. With the cold temps please plan accordingly with gear clothes etc.Rubber soles and studs( as opposed to felt) are highly recommended. Tom and I will evaluate beats after the snowfall tomorrow and adjust accordingly.Final beats will be emailed to anglers Saturday at dark. This will not impact the meeting location. Finally, if you are unable to attend Sunday for any reason please drop asap to allow waitlist anglers an opportunity to plan. We look forward to seeing everybody this weekend !

Adam Korman When were you guys planning on being there, and is it OK if I show up so I just get a few of how the beats are set up to walk along with you?

Geoffrey Butia Adam…we are unsure of when we will be marking beats. The beats are set we just need to be sure that snow fall doesn’t make accessing certain beats tough. As of now we can’t give an exact time when we will be there. We encourage you to walk the beats from the beat map we sent. Any changes will be minor. I’ll try to keep you in the loop closer to time.
